Interspecies Relations: Chapter Two
Jean woke up that morning curled up in a soft, warm bed. It was a far cry from the cravice he'd spent the winter in. His stomach was still full of little bunnies and his arms and tail were wrapped about his new wife. He nuzzles her cheek, tongue flickering out to tickle her nose. "Wake up honey bunny."
Sara had barely slept, too afraid of what might happen. The gentle contact was enough to wake her with a start. Whimpering, she tries to squirm away. Her husband chuckles and pulls her closer, tail gripping just firm enough to let her feel the pressure.
"Oh, stop that dear. I just wanted to be romantic." Inside him, the youngsters start to shift. "Hm, I'd better let them out now so we can all have some breakfast." He releases her and slides off the bed, expertly regurgitating the children one at a time. Sara waits in suspense, counting as each one comes out and relaxing only when all twelve are safe. They scurry over to greet their mother, who drops on her knees and hugs them, barely keeping from crying.
Thinking it best she have some time alone with them, Jean slips out to do some hunting. Good as the little ones feel inside him, he could easily starve if he doesn't actually finish off at least one decent meal every day or two.
When Sara finally looks up from her children, she finds the snake missing. Instructing them all to stay in the bedroom, she does a quick search of the house. Not finding him anywhere, she allows herself to relax for a little as she takes the children out to graze. The small area around the house doesn't supply enough for every meal, hence why she still needs to buy groceries. But it does give them some time to stretch out as they snack while she cuts up some other veggies, always keeping an eye on them.
She calls in sick for the day, too worried to leave the children until she has a better idea of what the snake will do. For hours she switches between watching her children and nervously looking out the windows. Its well past noon when she finally sees him, slithering slowly to the house with a moving bulge in his tail. Sara shoos the children into their room as she runs to the door, opening it to stare out in horror.
Jean smiles up at her sweetly. "Hi honey, I'm home." He moves up the small step, jarring the bulge and causing it to thrash. He winces, leaning on the door frame. "Sorry, just a little indigestion."
She cringes away, disgusted. Ignoring it, he goes to the bedroom to lie down. Sara follows, stopping just outside the room to watch as the children all gather around their new father.
"Daddy, are you sick?"
"Is it a tummy ache?"
Jean pats one of them on the head and offers a reassuring smile. "Daddy's gonna be fine, he just needs to rest a little. Do you want to take a nap with him?" He barely finishes saying it before they all scramble up and pile on and around him, happily snuggling together. He looks up at Sara while petting the nearest bunny. "They're really cute. You've raised them well."
Cautiously she walks in, pushing a few aside to sit on the edge of the bed. "Does it... does it still hurt?"
He nods. "Yeah, kinda. It'll, um... settle soon."
Sara sighs and gently starts massaging the lump, relaxing it and helping his stomach work. He lies back, eyes sliding closed in ecstacy. "Oh, that feels so much better. Thank you."
She continues until the snake's meal is still, then pulls back, disgusted at her own actions. Jean watches worriedly, pushing himself up from the pile of bunnies to wrap an arm around her. She pulls away and bolts from the room. He sighs, shaking his head. Seems she'll need a bit more time to get used to him.
Second part of the series. Will Sara accept Jean? Will he eat their children? Will any of the children ever get names? Read on and you may get closer to the answers...
